About Cognitron

The Cognitron Story

Cognitron is the result of two decades of frontline neuroscience research and development.

It all began in response to the frustration Professor Adam Hampshire faced when running cognitive studies the traditional way. He found the expensive lab setups, sample sizes limited by the requirement for in-person supervision, and imprecise measurement scales of the available tools were impeding his progress.

After building a new type of system that overcame the limitations he encountered, he teamed up with fellow computational neuroscientist Peter Hellyer. While Adam focused on developing and refining the high-precision measurement tools, Pete set about harnessing Cognitron's true potential, building its capacity to provide support at scale, across industries, and across geographical borders.

What began as a tool to aid their own research has since grown into the most advanced brain performance platform in the world, trusted by clinical, research, military, healthcare and pharmaceutical organisations internationally.

Professor Adam Hampshire

Chief Scientific Officer

Adam Hampshire is the originator and co-developer of the Cognitron platform and professor of cognitive and computational neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London. After studying natural sciences at the University of Cambridge, focusing on experimental psychology, and completing a PhD in functional brain imaging, Adam worked at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit Cambridge, before setting up the first lab at the Department of Brain Sciences at Imperial College London in 2013. He uses large-scale cognitive testing, brain imaging, psychometrics, and machine learning to understand the relationship between brain function and human cognition and to find ways to improve brain performance.

Dr Pete Hellyer

Chief Technical Officer

Pete co-developed the Cognitron platform and is senior lecturer in applied computational neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London. Drawing on a background in experimental medicine, neuroscience, and international development, his research spans cognitive disorders, traumatic brain injury, and functional neuroimaging, appearing in 100+ peer-reviewed publications and cited more than 10,000 times. He drives the company's strategic direction and leads a multidisciplinary team of researchers, developers, and clinicians.

Professor James Mitchell

Military Neurologist, University of Birmingham

James is a military clinician, scientist, and neurology and rehabilitation consultant who works with the Ministry of Defence, Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre, University of Birmingham and University Hospitals Birmingham. After medical and neuroscience qualifications at Imperial College London, he trained at the Centre for Defence Medicine, undertook officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and served as a regimental medical officer, including an operational tour in Afghanistan in 2011–2012. He is chief investigator of the mTBI-Predict Consortium, lead researcher for the UK MEGaBlast study, and leads the UK Military Traumatic Brain Injury Service.
